A cold-rolled stainless steel cable that consists of six identical 0.05-in diameter strands is used in a winch. If the maximum desired deflection must be less than 0.25-inches for a 25-ft length of the cable, determine the maximum tensile force that may be placed on the cable. Assume that the strands in the cable are not twisted (each exactly the same length). Also determine the normal stress in the cable.
Strain = d = 0.25/12 x 25...................solve for d
Stress in each strand = f = d x E where E is Young's modulus.......look up value for E and solve for f
Tensile force on each strand = p = f x cross sectional area of strand...........solve for p
Cable tensile force = P = t x number of strands...............solve for P
