What can cause knocking on a 97 Pontiac 3.4 engine after a major repair?
I recently replaced the lower intake gasket after the infamous gasket failure allowing cooling fluid into the engine oil. After a somewhat troublefree repair, the engine knocks severely and the check engine light blinks. I thought this meant a misfire, so I replaced the front three spark plugs and wires- no change. Since I had to loosen the rocker bolts and remove the rods to install the gasket, I am wondering if I should re-check the torque on these bolts. The manual did not indicate a need to roll the engine while torquing these bolts. Also I was very carefull to replace the rods in the exact same location. However, my torquing may have not been very accurate. Any suggestions?? Would a OBC scan tool tell me what is wrong?
The scan tool would be good for starters, but it only indicates what system is setting a default it may not pinpoint the cause. sounds like you need to reset the torque as well as assure the valve timing and lifter settings are correct.
