Thread Repair Inserts
Which will strip first, a stainless steal insert, or a Aluminium screw?
I have been thinking about purchasing a drill and tap set to repair 10-32 threads. It would be to repair paintball maker frames and bodies which have been stripped out by torquing the fittings to much. What I want to know is, when the idiot who stripped the threads the first time decides to over torque the screw/ fitting again, will the screw strip out first, or the insert?
Also, what is the best brand or type of thread inserts? I know there are a lot out there but I do not know the differences.
If you screw an aluminum screw into a steel insert or nut and you torque it too much, the aluminum screw will strip. Aluminum is much softer than steel. Aluminum is so soft and has such a weak shear strength if may be difficult to find aluminum screws.
For inserts, go to http://www.mcmaster.com/, and put threaded insert in the search box. Then click on Helical under type. Under "Helical Type —", you can click "Helical Insert Installation Instructions" to see how they work. Either the Standard or the Screw Lock will do what you want.
If you're going to use a stainless steel screw, use the Antiseizing 18-8 Stainless Steel insert. (screwing a ss screw into ss material causes them to bind together and gall. Either use the antiseize insert or make sude you lube the threads before you screw it together.)
