Tailors/seamtresses? Bridesmaid dress question...?
OK, I'm in a cousins wedding in November of this year. The bride picked out the bridesmaid dresses and we got measured and ordered (paid) for them this past weekend.
The thing is that I've recently started a workout routine and diet (not really a diet...I'm just eating healthy and 13-1500 calories a day). So prior to getting measured I had lost about 6-7 pounds. But I plan on continuing to lose weight and get into shape, especially with summer around the bend.
My question is is there a limit I should put on myself to how much weight I lose? My overall goal to lose is like 30lbs. At least 20...so I'm afraid that it will be hard to alter a dress that much.... do you suggest anyting in particular to your clients or can the dress be taken in as much as is necessary?
I don't want to ruin my cousins wedding by having a jacked up dress...
Hello, I am a qualified seamstress who can answer your question.
You were wise to order the size dress according to your body measurements the day you ordered your dress. Dresses can be altered to be made smaller and still fit well and look professional after all.
It is typical for a person to loose 2 lbs per week and do it safely. One can expect to drop a full size, depending on their body type and where they hold their weight, for every 12 to 15 lbs lost. So, if you do loose 30 lbs or so, you can expect to drop two sizes. If you work out and reconfigure your shape, you may drop yet another size if you do not bulk up with muscle during your exercise routine.
Dresses can be taken in a number of ways. There are side seams and sometimes princess seams and of course the zipper area that can all be taken in here and there to fit your new figure or maybe just the zipper area may need to be altered. Either way, a seamstresses dream alteration is to take a dress in and a night mare to take one out two sizes.
Just continue your routine, stay active, do not eat while you are standing, riding in a car, or watching television and that alone will cause you to drop at least 7 lbs over a course of a few months. Drink lots of water, avoid pasta, rice and breads that are white, instead, eat whole grain breads, pasta and rice. White food is bad food, so is added salt.
Don't worry about the dress for now. Next fall is time for your first alteration fitting. Be sure you have the correct undergarments for your fitting and you will be all set for a great fit. Bridal shops are going to hate me for this, but......I used to work in a bridal shop and I know, first hand, that the price of alterations in a bridal shop is three times more expensive than if you were to go out and find an independent seamstress. So, if I were you, I would take this time to find a seamstress and book her for alterations in the fall. She will love getting the heads up and you will not have to worry about finding a seamstress at the last minute. K?
