Can you help with a dripping shower head?

The handle is a lever type - lift up and left for hot, up and right for cold, straight down for off (obviously the "off" is the problem). When the shower hasn't been used for a couple of weeks, the drip slows gradually to almost nothing, but as soon as it's used again, it comes back and drips several gallons a day. Does it sound like the problem is in the shower head or the handle? Is it something I can try to fix myself, with little plumbing experience? If so, how?

It sounds like you may have a Delta style faucet. If so, it is not a washer. It may be the retainer ring.

Remove the handle. (You should be able to use an Allen wrench for this.) You should see a plastic ring with four notches in it. There is a special wrench that comes with the faucet but if you don't have one use a flat screw driver to GENTLY bump it clockwise. If you break that...good luck finding a replacement.

This will compress the internal parts, thus turning off the water.

Make sure you don't bump it too far. If you do you won't be able to move your handle.

There is no need to shut the water off to do this repair. In fact, it will be better if you don't turn it off.
