1. At what temperature is the reading on the Fahrenheit scale twice the reading on the Celsius scale?
2. A steel tape measures 100m long at 20C. ( a ) What will its length be at 32C if its coefficient of linear expansion is 0.000012? ( b ) In measuring 750m at 32C, what will the percentage error be?
1) 160 Celsius is 320 Fahrenheit.
Each degree Celsius is 1.8 times greater than a degree Fahrenheit.
Zero Celsius is 32 degrees Fahrenheit.
If t is the temperature in Celsius, then 2t =1.8 * t + 32
Divide through by 2 to get t = 0.9 t +16
Subtract 0.9t or t - 0.9t =16
or 0.1 t = 16
Multiply through by 10 to get t =160
Similarly you can work out that -40 Celsius = - 40 Fahrenheit.
2a) assuming the coefficient of linear expansion of steel is 0.000012 metres / metre.Kelvin.
Degrees Kelvin and degrees Celsius are the same increment, but K starts at absolute zero and C starts at the freezing point of pure water (273.15K). Because were looking at the increment, you don't need to convert. (Zero Fahrenheit is the freezing point of salty water).
The difference in temperature from 20 to 32 is 12 degrees, so the increase in the tape length is 100metres * 12 degrees * 0.000012 m / m.K which is 0.000144 * 100 which is .0144 metres or 14.4mm.
Add this to the starting length and the new length is 100.0144m
2b) 750m is longer than the tape, so there will be errors from remembering exactly where the tape finished to start the next run.
The error of the tape is 0.00014 or 0.014% for any length less than 100m (the length of the tape). However, the object you are measuring also expands to a greater or less amount depending on its coefficient. For example, if you were measuring a steel rail, which had warmed up to the same temperature as the tape and had the same coefficient, the result would be spot on for what it would be at 20C.
If the measured length is 750m at 32C, then the length it would be at 20C
p.s. the coefficient of pure iron is 0.000012 m / m.K, steel is a bit higher. See the link below for the actual figures.
p.p.s. Shouldn't Fahrenheit be in the history section rather than physics. The UK & USA signed up to metrication in 1875.
