Standard Tool Set
1994 Subaru Impreza, timing belt replacement doable by a novice mechanic?
Two part question. ONE, is the engine a "non-interference" engine? In which case I would probably just keep driving it until it goes and then replace it. TWO, is it something I could do myself? I am a reasonably handy guy with your standard set of hand tools in my garage. (I bought the car for 500 bucks because it is ugly but it gets 33.4 MPG. I'm trying to keep my maintenance costs down on it.) I have another car to drive if this one goes down for a while. Is there anything else I should do "while I am in there?"

Because of the engine layout its a pretty easy job. I can do it in an hour to an hour and a half. The whole thing is doable in an afternoon even for a first timer.
First thing is to remove the radiator. You can do it without, but room is very tight and for the sake of 10 mins taking out the rad you will save a couple of hours.
Next, remove the front pulley. Its a 22mm nut and can be pretty tight. You may very well need to lock the flywheel, but you can see the starter ring gear through a little rubber bung at the middle rear of the engine.
Remove the plastic covers from the front of the engine (loads of 10mm bolts) If the internals are oily, the crank seal is probably seeping, replace it, its cheap!
Observe the timing marks on the pullys. each pulley has a line which must line up with a dot/mark on the engine. If you have a single cam engine then the job is super easy!
Locate the tensioner (to the left of the crank and up a little) There is a tiny thing that looks like a shock absorber held to the engine with a pair of 12mm nuts. Make sure your timing marks are bang on and then remove it.
On your 'baby shock' the silver rod wil be sticing out quite a lot, you need to put it in a vice and (slowly) push it back in. You will notice that there is a hole in the body and a hole in the shaft. You need to put something in here to hold the rod down whilst you refit everything. I use a very small drill.
Remove the belt. Check the tensioners/water pump for play or roughness and replace if needed.
Refit the tensioner shock, fit new belt. Start at the crank and work anti clockwise, ending up at the tensioner pulley. It is a fiddle, but work at it. Dont try to pry it on with a screwdriver as you will damage the belt. Now remove your drill bit from the tensioner (everything goes tight!) and double check your timing marks.
Finally, stick all the plastic shields, radiator etc back on, Done!
1.8 engines are non interference, 2.0 can cause damage but generally OK. 2.0 turbo blows to bits.
