Replacing McPherson Struts-Removing Top Nut?
I am trying to replace the front struts on an '02 Hyundai Elantra. I have replaced struts before, on a '98 Hyundai Accent, so I know how to use coil spring compressors, etc. After removing the strut assembly, and compressing the spring (I know enough not to try & remove the nut until the spring is compressed!) I find no flat spot or anywhere good to grip the inside shaft & keep it from turning while I'm trying to remove the top nut, which seems very tight. Am I missing something? Also, on the new part the top nut seems to fit the threads tightly, almost like a tapered thread.
There should be a center spot in the top of the strut for large Torx type socket. Thank the Koreans for not making the car easy to work on. If there's nothing on top of the strut you'll have to use a nasty big old Ridgid pipe wrench directly on the strut shaft.
