At what temperature will hair freeze solid and break off? Flexible hair keeps polar animals safely warm.?
Hair, and feathers, are made up of keratin protien as I recall. While growing up in Northern Canada I watched large Ravens fly overhead in intense cold winters of -70 Degrees. Their feathers remained flexible and strong enough to keep them warm and flying. Polar bears and Penguins likewise can live in extreme cold without having their fur or feathers snapping off and leaving them naked and vulnerable. But, surely Keratin protien must freeze solid enough to break at some temperature! Does anyone know when hair (and feathers) will freeze solid enough to lose its flexibility and then break?
Hair will freeze at 0 grades Kelvin.
