m - audio fast track - garage band / pro tools - sound issues?

I installed the M- Audio fast track and pro tools. I can not figure out how to play it in either garage band or pro tools, it wont register that my guitar is playing. I feel like i've tried every combination in the sound settings. I need to know what my inputs and outputs should be set as in garage band and/or the system preferences; i have a mac. Basically i would like to play the effects of the amps and pedals on garage band through my amplifier or speakers and also to be able to record my guitar and vocals. Any ideas to make this happen would be great.

Here's a basic 'How to Record in Pro Tools using an M-Audio FastTrack USB'. Follow these steps and you'll be recording in no time!

1. Create a New Blank Session at 44.1kHz, 24 bits (music) or 48kHz, 24 bits (film).
2. In the menu bar select: Track > New Track
3. Make a new Mono Audio track in Samples.
4. In the Menu Bar select: Window > Mix
5. In the middle of your new track you will see two grey boxes. This is the I/O section of your new track.
6. The top rectangle is the Input. Choose Interface > 1 for a microphone or Interface > 2 for a guitar.
7. The bottom rectangle is the Output. On the bottom select Interface > 1-2. This is your monitors or headphones.
8. If you're recording guitar, ensure that the guitar/line button is set to guitar.
9 Press the record button on a track to get the track ready to be recorded on.
10. Now, while singing into the microphone or playing your guitar, slowly turn up the gain on the interface. An ideal recording level averages in the low to middle of the yellow.
11. Now press F12 or 3 on the numpad to begin recording.
12. Press spacebar to stop.
13. Press spacebar again to playback what you just recorded.

You should now have made your first recording. Nice!

Hope this helps,
