Bike maintenance (push bike)?
Hi, I have a bike sitting in my shed. I'd love to go and ride out on it, only last time I went out on it, one of the pedals fell off, and I don't know how to repair it. Plus, due to lack of riding, the gears seem to have gone a bit stiff and rusty.
Can anyone advise me on what I can do, other than keep on going to the bike shop for repair, as this has cost me a fortune. Are there any good books out there on cycle maintenance, and is there anywhere I can buy all the parts from? Will bike shops stock any components and tools I might need so that I can maintain and repair my bike at home? I don't know the first thing about cycle maintenance and feel really stupid rolling my bike into the shop every time it gets a puncture...
I agree with JG, it's a good book. I also like the Haynes Bicycle Maintenance manual. Defintely buy yourself a guide because I guarantee six months from now it will be well-thumbed and covered in your oily fingerprints.
It's pretty good fun (when it's not cold and wet) to fix up bicycles, I wish I had the space to do one up now. There are a few things that take a while to learn and a couple of jobs I would leave to experts (replacing the bottom bracket is SO easy to screw up) but greasing the wheel-bearings or replacing brake/gear cables aren't such difficult jobs and they can make an amazing difference.
You'll need a socket & spanner set; Halfords - if you are in the UK - sell a great set for automotive use that is under £100 (I've got one I use mainly for my car) but you can borrow tools or buy them as you need them - you can pick up second-hand tools for next to nothing.
To start out, borrow a couple of spanners, buy a bottle of 3-in-1 oil and some bicycle grease (to grease the bearings) and find a couple of rags.
Don't spend too much money fixing up cheap bikes - it's easy to get carried away when you realise you can make rusty old bikes rideable again - but starting out on the one you've got is fine.
If I can afford it (it's £1000) this will be my next bicycle:

It may look dull but I know the place that makes them (it's near my home town) and every component is super-slick and built to last forever. Keep your eyes open for old high-quality bicycles being sold cheap or even thrown away; I swear there are people who dump expensive bikes for nothing more than a rusty cable.
