What are the chances that Mercury struck Earth, producing the moon?
I heard that Mercury is much more dense than Venus and Earth, which leads astronomers to speculate it was a captured world. My question is whether it's plausible Mercury struck the Earth on it's way in, causing the ejection of our Moon before being reeled in by Sol. This would have had to be very early in the development of the solar system if it were true, but is there enough time for such an event to have resulted in our current configuration?
Zero. The latest theory is that a Mars size object struck Earth billions of years ago, and that object was destroyed while Earth was almost destroyed, and the debris left over formed the Moon.
