Can I Punch Down a Cat 6 cable in a Cat 5e patch panel?

Our network is currently made up of all cat 5e components. We are adding new office space and I was going to wire the new addition with cat 6 components just because it's newer. (Not that we really need it) I was wondering if cat6 can be punched into the existing cat 5e patch panel. I want to leave the existing wiring alone for now. Also, can I use the cat 5e RJ-45 connectors that I currently have for the cat 6 cable and can I use the same crimping tool that I currently have that is for cat 5e? The only physical difference that I could see is that the cat6 uses 23 awg wires and the cat5e uses 24 awg wires, which is a difference of about .0025".

Yes, You can punch down a Cat 6 cable into a Cat 5e patch panel. We do the upgrade and have been using Cat 6 as an upgrade to our servers. Most networks don't even recognize the difference in this upgrade. Cat 6 will help cut down on noise and static. If you already have the boxes of Cat 6 then by all means use it. I think it works a little better and will fit the 5e RJ-45 although we do use the larger Panduit Mini-Com RJ45 couplers, that is made for the Cat 6 cable. I like the Quick-Port USOC. You can use the same crimping tool and stripper. You are correct that the only real difference is the increase in diameter; going from 23 gauge wires to 24 gauge wires. Will carry much better on really long pulls. We use the Cat 6 in all the Federal Court houses and Federal Defense Dept.; security PDU to CPU- signaling and Modem. All our servers are double protected and isolated, in our network.
We use Leviton QuickPort GigaMax mostly with Leviton eXreme , Snap-In connectors.
