How can I safely unload a muzzle loader rifle?

I bought a .50 caliber muzzle loader at a garage sale, and the owner told me he had bought it used 20 years ago and had never fired it. The nipple that holds the percussion cap is missing and the threaded hole is stripped. When I looked into getting it re-tapped, I discovered that the gun is loaded. I bought a screw-type bullet puller that attaches to the end of the ramrod, but all I have managed to do is screw into the ball and pull out shards of lead. The ball isn't coming out. I am cautious about putting my hand on the ramrod at the end of the barrel, but can't seem to drive the screw far enough into the ball to get a good grip. Since the load has been in there so long, I don't want to consider firing the gun, even if I could get a nipple screwed into it.
Any ideas?

do not attempt to fire the gun , tied to a tree or otherwise.
make sure to kill the powder by getting water into the nipple hole.
after that you should have no worries about using the bullet puller.
the lead ball is probably quite hard and will require a little work in getting the screw to start into it.
some penetrating oil may help to free it up if there is corrosion in the barrel.
i have seen stuck bullets removed with air pressure from a compressor through the nipple hole.
of course one must use the normal precautions when attempting this.
if all else fails an old trick was to take a length of allthread with a drill bit welded to the end large enough to make a good sized hole in the ball thus weakening it's purchase on the barrel.
insert the rod into a length of rubber tubing to protect the barrel.
after drilling through the ball install a nut and washer onto the rod and insert it in the barrel so you can thread it into the hole in the bullet.
slide the washer to the muzzle and tighten the nut up to the washer.
gently tighten the nut and it becomes a strong puller.
