How do you properly prevent wood from splitting and warping?
I recently built a desk. I brought the wood indoors and let it acclimate for a number of days. For the tabletop I took two 8 inch solid lengths of wood as well as a 12 inch piece that was glued together from smaller pieces by the manufacturer. I placed and glued these together to form my desired desk top depth. I clamped it down tightly on top and bottom and let the glue set. It looked great after drying, but after a week it bowed nearly half of an inch and the glue seams that came in the 12 inch board started to split at the ends.
I constructed this from higher-end oak that comes nicely cut and wrapped in plastic, so the quality should be good. Is there a step I am neglecting or precautions I could be taking to avoid this from happening? Thanks.
This happened before you attached it to the desk? or after? You should start with quarter sawn boards for a stable flat surface. that means if you look at the end, the growth rings should be short lines going up and down rather than long curved lines going across. Since this is hard to come by these days, your next best bet to get a flat wide surface is to use fairly narrow pieces and alternate the growth rings, one curving up, the next curving down. that way they will counteract each other.
Now for the cracking, You need to remember that wood expands a lot across its width and not much along it's length. So if you attach two pieces solidly together, end grain to side grain, it will split when it shrinks for sure. to minimize this table tops etc are attached loosely with clips or screws in slotted holes to allow them to move independently.
