Are the comparisons between the current US and Germany during the rise of the Nazis so farfetched?

When Jerry Klein, radio host, asked the public on a call in show, if all US Muslims should be tattooed with a crescent moon or be forced to wear a distinctive arm-band, the phones were jammed with callers who thought this would be a great idea and totally missed to parallels to the required Star of David. They apparently thought that this would really alleviate public fears.

One caller even tragically suggested that we force them into concentration camps as we did the Japanese in WWII.

Can the similar tactics of fear creation employed by our government and Hitler be denied any longer?

No, not so far fetched. But the debater in me wants to say, okay, look at the differences: Hitler took Germany from democracy to totalitarianism and attempts to conquer Europe and wipe out the Jews in less than ten years. It's taking us a lot longer and in many ways we're still not there -- and I think we never will be. For example, you can ask this question without fear of arrest.

But still, the drift is in that direction. Your point is valid. I saw what must have been the same article you did (on Alternet?). Klein is actually a liberal who was seeing how far his listeners would go. Scary stuff. But then, don't we see the same kind of thing from a lot of people posting racist/fascist material on Answers?

Here's a frightening thought: what if the USA had yet another 'equivalent to Pearl Harbor' -- another serious attack that killed a few hundred or a few thousand people? (I mean inside the USA; dead non-Americans and even dead soldiers don't count for much, it seems.)

Pat Robertson for president, anyone?
