A domestic water-carbonating kit uses steel
cylinders of carbon dioxide, each with a vol-
ume of 250 mL. Each weighs 1.042 kg when
full and 0.752 kg when empty. What is the
pressure of gas in a full cylinder at 22 ◦C?
Answer in units of bar
You need to use the ideal gas law
pV = nRT
Where p = pressure (kPa), V = volume (litres), n = number of moles, R = the gas constant (approx 8.314) and T = temperature (Kelvin)
So, the weight of the gas is 1.042 - 0.752 = 0.29kg = 290g
The molecular weight of CO2 is 44, therefore there are 290 / 44 = 6.59 moles in the cylinder.
Temperature needs to be in Kelvin, so we add 273 to 22 to get 295K
Volume needs to be in litres, so we have 0.25L
Rearranging the gas law to solve for pressure we get
p = nRT/V
=> p = 6.59 * 8.314 * 295 / 0.25 = 64660kPa
to convert kPa to bar we divide by 100
Therefore the answer is 646.6bar
