Having a successful garage sale--any tips?
My first ever garage sale--I feel like such a grown up! Does anyone have any tips on how to price items, whether to set up near the front or the back, how to stay cool outside in FL (fans?) without air conditioning the neighborhood, what type of price stickers to use, and so forth?
Some of the items I need help with are: Gazelle Freestyle Elite (good condition, a few years old, cost almost $500, includes original vhs tapes and maintanence kit); a really nice electronic keyboard (paid over $400), small round wrough iron table with two chairs, has glass top, some weathering but no rust; 36x72 thick glass table sitting on heavy marble base with six very nice chairs, good condition; authentic sombreros from mexico (we bought them there, $40 each); set of two glass, brass and chrome end tables with matching library table.
1. Advertise, and then do it some more. If you don't want to pay to put an ad in the paper put an ad up on Craigslist once a week before the yard sale and then the day before and the day of (delete your postings though, keep CL clutter free!). Put up notices at local businesses if they have a bulletin board, or ask if you can stick a flier in the window.
2. When you make your signs use the same color posterboard and the same color marker throughout. Do something to make yours distinct if competition is fierce. Add a contrasting color, attach a balloon, anything to make your sign stick out. Make them BIG too, bigger than you think is necessary. Not only will a bigger sign draw more attention, but it's easier to read as you're approaching. Many sales I've passed up because I couldn't read the sign until it was too late and didn't feel like turning around.
3. Clean your stuff! It takes extra time, but cleaner things sell for more.
4. Figure out the least you're willing to take for an item and price it at least 50% above that. It'll give you plenty of bargaining power and you already known your minimum so you don't have to 'think on your feet' as it were when one customer wants to haggle and 3 others have questions about items.
5. Price EVERYTHING! There's nothing I hate more than going to a sale where few, or no, things are priced. I won't ask, I'll just leave. How can I haggle when I don't even know what YOU think it's worth? I hate that so much...
6. Remember you're trying to get RID of things, so if someone offers you a reasonable price for something, even if it's a bit less than you wanted, take it, unless you just can't bear to part with it for less than you want. The more stuff you can get rid of, the less you have to haul back in when it's over.
7. Add some sort of 'late shopper' motivation. On the last day make it all buy one get one, or everything's half off. You'll get rid of more stuff that way.
Good luck and have fun! If you want to make a few extra bucks keep some cold bottles of soda and water in a cooler and charge accordingly. You'd be surprised how many people ask if I'm selling anything to drink when I have a yard sale, and when I do I make a mint!
