husband's cousin's daughter admits to cutting. who should i tell?
My husband's cousin and his wife divorced last year. They have a 11 yo and a 9 yo. The 11 yo asked my husband for his utility knife the other day for the purpose of cutting herself. She showed him scars on her wrists and fingers from cuts. None too terrible but they were visible. I'm sure she learned about cutting from a tv show that she got me hooked on called Degrassi. The character on that show cut for a couple of episodes and was treated and continues meetings. That's beside the point. I do not feel comfortable telling her father because of the way the divorce happened (he left her for another woman and married that woman). He and his new spouse are not the most responsible of folk. And I think they would get extremely angry and would hurt more than help the child. I am also worried about telling her mother because she's not the most responsible of types (though not a drinker or drug user). And it could all really be fake for all I know. Who and how do I tell?
You can tell her school counselor, they would be able to help out with telling the parents appropriately and how to handle it after wards. You can even do it privately and they wouldn't have to know you are involved in it at all. Since she showed your husband, it sounds like she wants attention. You could also try just taking her out and having talks with her. If both parents are going through a divorce she might not be getting enough personal time at home with them.
