How likely was it for people in the 1940's, 1950's and 1960's to do their own house maintenance?
If something broke who would fix it?
Did people own tool kits (hammer, flashlight, screwdriver etc)
Did people own home maintenance books?
If clothes were damaged would people sew them or throw them out?
During those decades, my father was "Mr. Fix It" & there was nothing that he couldn't do, when it came to jobs around the house. He had a giant toolbox that was so well organized & when he had a job to do, he knew right where his tools were. No one was allowed to touch his tools unless it was my mom, needing a hammer for something, when he wasn't home. My dad had a natural talent when it came to building & repairing. I'm sure there were repairman who were called to do a job for someone, but that repairman, never graced our doorstep, for as long as I can remember. When our clothing needed mending, my mom was quick to get her sewing basket out & make the necessary repairs. She was a big believer in the saying, "A stitch in time saves nine." Socks that had holes in them, were darned with the use of a special wooden tool that went inside the sock, that made sewing the hole closed, easier. I learned a lot as I watched my parents take care of our home & everything in it. Watching them is how I learned to do so many things.
