Heavy Duty Winch

Advice on battery grounding and extender.?
I just installed a winch on the front of my chevy conversion van. The negative cable does not quite reach to the negative battery terminal. Can I ground the negative lead on the winch to the car body instead of directly to the negative battery terminal? Also, if I put the winch on the rear of the van can I use the trailer light wiring to power the winch or can I use the power going to the reclining rear seat or do I have to run a heavy duty cable from the front battery to the rear of the van? Appreciate any advice. Thanks
Winches take quite a bit of current to run. About the only other thing on most vehicles that draws a comparable amount of current is the starter. You can run the ground cable from the winch to the frame or even the body of your vehicle, with a couple of precautions. It doesn't have to be to the frame or the bumper, but it should be something more substantial than your basic sheet metal.
The other thing is that there has to be a certain amount of capability to carry the ground current all the way back to the battery. Here's the thing. Many vehicles only have a thick negative cable running from the engine to the battery, because of the starter. Then there is only a smaller cable to handle the grounding for all the other electrical devices.
On some vehicles, this smaller cable may go directly from a part of the chassis to the negative battery terminal, But on other vehicles, a thin cable, or even a braided strap, can be connected between the chassis and the engine, and the ultimate return path is through the heavy cable strapped to the engine. In this case, you might have just the one heavy cable attached to your negative battery terminal.
There are a few different ways you can ensure an adequate return path for your winch short of running a heavy cable all the way to the battery. You could acquire a new cable, or modify your current negative cable, so that it has a thick cable to both the engine and your chassis. Or, you could run a thick cable between the chassis and your engine, using the engine/starter ground cable for the last of your return path.
Another option, which may be the least expense and amount of work for your front winch, is to just bolt the negative cable to the same place on the engine block as your existing thick ground cable. Basically, just envision the path from the winch ground back to the battery negative, and make sure it's all at least as thick as the cables.
As for the positive feed, you will need a cable on the order of the cable for your starter, or larger in the case of a rear winch, because it's further away from the battery. Definitely not something that wiring meant for your lights, or even a smaller motor could handle.
A great source for this type of cable is a welding supply store. They have insulated cable meant for Arc welders in these kinds of sizes, and can be cut to any length you want. Then just use a propane torch to solder a terminal on each end. You might consider a fusible buss to attach between that and your regular positive battery cable. Check with your local RV store.
