What's the best solution for our suspension problems with our Landcruiser 60 series?

Two months ago, we put new shockies and 9 layer leaf springs on our 60 series Landcruiser. We are currently travelling with a lot of load (but not excessive), so the back springs have come down to the point of continuously bottoming out. It turns out they can only carry 300 kg, which obviously isn't enough. We have asked around, but nobody seems to know what the solution is. Some talk of airbags (but because we go offroad lots we don't want to risk punctures), springs helpers (which other people have advised us against) and new springs. It just seems to be very hard to find new proper springs that are definitely able to carry our load (we are in Broome at the moment).

We are not sure on how much load we are carrying, but it is substantial: 120 liter fuel tank, 60 liters of water, fridge, hand winch, steel bumper with 2 tyres on and lots of gear.

Any advise from somebody?

Cheers, Kim

Well by your load description you are well beyond what the truck was designed to handle.

It is possible to get springs to handle the load, but if ever empty the ride would be nasty. There will be no preexisting springs to handle that load and will have to be custom made to handle it. Shops that service commercial trucks can often build springs to your specification. Be sure to consider the increase in stress on the spring mount points, they will likely need to be reinforced. The same with the shocks, they would have to be a stiffer shock to handle the stiffer springs, and require stronger mounting points. By using stiffer springs you will also limit your articulation for off roading, and cause handling problems while on the road.

Air springs could potentially puncture, but would be the easiest on the existing truck structure. They could be in assistance to the current leaf springs, so even if punctured you could continue on until a proper repair could be made.

The axles might take a beating also, once the suspension is sorted for springs, you might be tempted to drive harder. They are not meant to take that kind of abuse. ( assuming that you are using the stock axles )

Spring helpers have the same limitation as heavier springs, by the time you get a strong enough helper you are stressing the spring mounts and limiting your wheel travel. Also they tend to have hardware that extends below the factory springs, causing hangups and possible damage to the helpers themselves while off roading.
