why does my electric extension lead spark when I put a plug a plug in?

I plugged in my laptop adaptor and blue sparks came from the socket as I plugged it in ,They came out about a cm for a fraction of a second .Plug and extension still works. Something similar happened a few years ago with another extension and eventually really big sparks came out and it must of blown the fuse because the extension lead stopped working after.
Are blue sparks a sign of needing a new lead or is it dust or moisture perhaps(which I know would be dangerous)? Or is it normal-static electricity or something?

Thanks for answers :-)

The usual reason for sparks is due to a bad or dirty contact. You shouldn't really have items switched on before plugging them in (as you must have on this occasion as sparks show you are drawing electrical current). If you have a poor contact it is because the socket prongs have opened slightly and you need to dispose of the extension. Dirty contacts are caused by plugging and unplugging items that are switched on, and the spark is due to the current drawn, this in turn burns the surface of the contacting socket and will eventually overheat.
Hope this explains
