Any tips for tapping threads straight?

I bought an irwin tap kit that has the tap and the proper size drill bit. I drilled the hole perfect. Then when I went to tap, I found it very difficult to keep the tap straight. I ended up taping a hole that when a bolt is inserted it is around 80 degrees instead of 90ish. I applied an oil/lub during the tapping process to keep things cool. Any other tricks for starting a tap straight?

You did not say how thick the material is. If it is thin, it can be difficult to keep it straight. A steady hand is the key. In thicker material, the tap will follow the hole, so the key is to get the hole straight. Best method for that is a drill press. If you don't have one, then make or purchase a drill guide. Easy to make if again you have access to a drill press. Drill a hole of the correct diameter in a 1" block of wood. Now use that to guide your hole by clamping it to the work. After drilling a straight hole, the tap should follow it. A block of wood could also be used to guide the tap in thinner stock.

I was taught when cutting treads by hand to cut a 1/4 or 1/2 turn, then back off the tap 1/2 a turn or so. This method continuously clears tap of the cut material and results in much cleaner threads.

INSERT, DELETE, THE END!
