Help! Coil Spring Compressor problem?
I have an internal coil spring compressor exactly like this one...

I have both sides of the hooks directly across from each other and the shaft is directly straight when I start to tighten it down. The problem is the more I tighten it down, the spring starts to curl one way or the other. I cannot use two outer compressors, because I wouldn't be able to install the spring with those connected. The spring has no strut, is 14 inches long and has to be compressed to 10 inches for me to install. Please help.

I don't understand the first answer, other than there is no other internal compressor I can find.
Is it okay or safe to compress it while it's curling? Will it straighten out when it gets farther down?
The spring should not curl significantly over only 4 inches of compression. Its not a very safe idea - for situations similar to this, I have a heavy set of towing chains that I use to wrap around the spring to ensure I don't experience "catastrophic failure" during a removal/installation procedure. But I try to avoid the curves in the first place.
Can you get your compression over a smaller span on the spring - in other words are you trying to compress nearly the full length of the spring? This is not really necessary - you can compress the center section (or the wider sections of a variable rate spring). That way, you shouldn't see as much curvature of the spring during compression.
And no, it doesn't correct itself as you get further down! It should get worse as you tension the spring, if its curving right now.
