Clamping Strap Clamp
Which type of flute lyre should I use for marching?
I don't want to use one but the director is making it mandatory. I've seen the wrist strap, forearm type, clamp-on type and the armpit type. Which one do you prefer or suggest?
All my best HS flute students do NOT play flute for marching - you cannot hear the flute anyway, and it ruins your embouchure to try to blast. So we just duck the issue. They do silks, rifles, drum major, or utility percussion. When marching season is over, they win all the top seats - because their flute skills are great, having not been ruined outdoors.For MS kids, where they cannot get out of it - the forearm type. Ideally, I get them to memorize their music - they have to play it for 3 years anyway, and it is a good skill to memorize music. Play picc if you can- and memorize.
There is also a universal lyre that goes around your neck - the top looks like a huge top of a coat hanger - and the lyre then looks like it is growing out of your sternum. These feel more comfortable - but when you march, they tend to bounce around, and you get nauseous . . .
