how do i get free space back after erasing it by accident on a mac os x?
i'm about to break down and cry if i think i did something that's irreversible and incredibly stupid. i have an iMac with the the screen that can move left to right up and down. i wanted to free up disk space and get rid of files slowingup my computer's processor speed. i opened up disk utility and saw that i could "erase free disk space" thinking (for whatever reason) that it would get rid of junk files etc. but when it finished, it took away the 30GB i had free and left me with just under 1GB. is there anyway to get this free disk space back at all? please, someone give me hope here, i need it.
From what I've read, this problem should go away once you've restarted. What happens is when the Disk Utility erases that "free space" it temporarily locks it until the operation is complete. Once the free space has been erased, the size should return to normal.

In the future, try downloading an application that runs maintenance scripts, that may help. Also, use the Disk Utility to repair your file permissions once in a while. Furthermore, don't leave a bunch of icons on your desktop. Clear up the clutter, if there is any.
It could just be that your system is pretty old. My Mac mini G4 is quite slow, compared to my Intel Mac mini and Core Duo MacBook Pro. If you're running Tiger, it might seem slow to you.
