How to remove a broken light bulb stuck in socket?
I have a broken bulb that is stuck in a lamp socket. I have tried to use long nose pliers to remove the bulb remnants, however it does not seem to be moving. I would try the potato method, but the middle glass thing in the middle of the bulb is still attached and I can't seem to break it off.
I'm finding the lamp base is not so easy to turn while holding the pliers to the bulb...and it almost seems like I am twisting the pliers around the metal. Because of this, I have started to bend and tear a small section of the metal of the bulb (something that I'm sure is not a good thing). There's also a cardboard-like thing in between the socket and metal part of the bulb.
Is it possible the lamp is so old that the socket has a switch of some type that I'm not hitting? I don't know how old it is...

I assume this lamp is not plugged in?
On/off switches should not hinder the bulb's removal. I've used needle nosed pliers (sounds like what you used), and grip the egde of the bulb - the metal part with the threads. - bend it if you have to to get a good grip...and apply serious pressure in the direction of the turn to loosen it. If the bulb's been in there so long that it's oxydized, perhaps a drop or two of 3-in-1 household oil down the side between the inside of the lamp socket to help lubricate.
